	Archive Reindex Archive (ARA) is a web-based platform that presents a collection of photographic archives from the National Geographic Magazine issues dating from 1945 to 1955, where visitors can leave annotations of “what they see.” The images are masked with a fungus-like layer that represents how a machine sees them, with the aim of reassembling the perception of internalized movements of general viewers’ eyes upon encountering the images for the first time. ARA unearths archived remnants of the aftermath of WWII—“expeditious” human movements of global colonization and imperialization and the discrepancies between raw materials, human resources and capital. It collects contemporary annotations that correct, question, and confront the uncomfortable gazes and the given semiotic relationships in the archive to bring a collective means of slow, gentle recuperation to those subject to alterity.

Started as an extended iteration of Proposition 2: Index, ARA has evolved into a full collaboration between Ivetta Sunyoung Kang and Kii (Wonki) Kang through which Ivetta’s interests in linguistics, poetics, and ethnographic indexicality studies and Kii’s interests in the critical use of computation and embodied semantics converge and intersect one another.

ARA is a platform for growing collections of texts through which authors, poets and writers respond to the latent concepts and emotions, emerged from, stuck to, and imbued with the artists throughout the entire creation.
ARA is only presented through a performance/participatory performance (worksho) entitled Memex Room.

	“Fatherless Hymn, Motherless Cacophony, Figureless Cradle” (FMF) presents a live game of string figures orchestrated at Sugar Beach during Nuit Blanche. It is a tragic-comedy performance piece whose prophetic epic poem spans six acts with respective titles and geometries of string figures that desire to bring mythopoeia to the piece. FMF utilizes a thick, industrial rope to connect it to urban infrastructure and reveal its jurispathic nature at a monumental scale. Each string figure for each act is invented through reimagining transnational ethnographic archives of string figures across the globe and their semantics through which the piece dreams of storytelling, where human bodies, sweat and flesh, their labour and laborious desires for revolutions coalesce into poetic, ephemeral monuments as a tribute to those whose bodies and labour have been historically “undercommoned”. For 12 hours, performers assemble string figures, working an all-night shift and creating a series of prosodic vocal activations that seek out a universal language liberated from the human tragedy in grammar and written letters. They are the keepers of oral secrets and carriers of earthwork labour infiltrated by the social machine.”

	I’m Allergic to Archival Dust was conceived and prototyped as the first iteration of Proposition 4: Breathing in 2023 during the three-month-long residency at ZK/U (Berlin, Germany). It consists of several prototype components across different mediums. 
Proposition 4: Breathing will revolve nearby the history of the South Korean guest workers whose labour was exported to West Germany under the cross-national agreement starting in the late 60s. The iteration will include interviews, personal archives and belongings of elderly nurses residing across Germany and their respective acts of storytelling. Who owns their memories? Why didn't some (or most) of their memories become part of the "history"? What ephemeral and subtle bodily enunciations will be enacted when certain memories are summoned to the contemporary act of telling and performing in a reparative mode of speech act? Breathing will consist of many paused, sporadical, yet constant breaths emanating from invisiblized stories to fill archival and epistemological crevices in the leading fabric of the guest worker's history. The artist acknowledges that the Written Resolution is written by the Koreanische Frauengruppe in Deutschland, extracted from &#38;lt;국제여성운동 연대 자료집, 1990&#38;gt; (International Women Solidarity Movement Archive, 1990). The Light of the Factory song used in the video is composed by Minki Kim and used in the play, sharing the same title (Dir. Hyegyung Lee) enacted by the Koreanische Frauengruppe in Deutschland. The recording file was provided by the group from the Koreanische Frauengruppe in Deutschland Archive.

	When your tongue stutters, you feel an uneasy rambling at its tip, something that is hard for others to notice, but that you realize is growing more and more. A melancholy lingers, born from that experience, as an indication that you have words eager to be spoken, yet always followed by hesitation and self-protective mechanisms. The rugged journey through which the words slowly and uncomfortably come out of your mouth may ease you or leave you with a certain aftertaste.&#38;nbsp;The aftertaste is tangled in politics, the colonial history of the “global” languages and the binary norms delineating “perfect” and “flawed” utterances.&#38;nbsp; 

Indication of Melancholy Speech unfolds through various components — music box scorings, the riddles the artist wrote while confronting social irony about her stuttering tongue in her later acquired language, excerpts of her journal and particular collected objects. The journal is a series of long-term growing prose through which the artist commemorates her fading mother tongue while realizing that her speech anxiety comes from the socially prevailing superiority of language hierarchies. The collection of objects appears in the journal excerpts as metaphorical indications to commemorate the traumatized “tongue”.&#38;nbsp; 
All the components are unified through the thirteen QR codes through which the audience can access the pre-recordings of the music box scores. The scores were generated by the artist's pronunciation, who read aloud sentences detected as unsuccessful pronunciations by the most dominant English dictionary used in South Korea. These unsuccessful utterances become another form of language;&#38;nbsp;a language of aphasic tongues, an ironic yet beautiful polyphony born of the discordant sounds of the music box notes.&#38;nbsp;

Proposition 3: String Figure


2022-2023. Seven-channel video installations (HD, colour, sound, loop, variable dimensions), 46 photography (archival Canson Baryta Photographique, variable dimensions), indexical words, Dashes out of the Room (transcription poem, string figure inventions in drawing, videos, notations, and photography textured paper, OHP film, 8.5” X 11”).
The entire project was created at the AGO X RBC Artist-in-Residence 2022, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, Canada. Project participants: Miru Bahc, Donghoon Gang, Sophie Morrow, Dongyan Chen, Corinna Berndt, and Yoojin Lee.

Proposition 3: String Figure unfolds in three parts: revisiting their pasts of playing, learning and teaching string figures (cat's cradle) in childhood; reenacting them and documenting how the friends live with their own strings in the present moment; imagining how they would revive the ephemeral conversations with Ivetta (a total of 12 conversations that went on for average 2 hours.) by inventing string figures responding to the memories. Meanwhile, Ivetta murmurs in front of their digital screen as turning the ephemerality of the conversations that dissolve into the virtuality of the digital environments into something at least reciteable, tangible, revivable, and living matters that we might be able to keep visiting even if the actual moments fade out. 


One friend would finish archiving their four days spent with their string and string figures, and the materials would be passed to the next friend. Every one of them was asked to index respective surroundings of when a photo of their string was taken. It’s become an exensive list of “indexical words” (that, Ivetta hopes, can function as a sprouting point for your imaginations and empathy to feel related to their storytelling and surroundings.)</description>

	I am hesitating to use the word, decolonial, in this short description of my new work, Proposition 2: Index (2020-2021). That being said, the word came and stayed with me throughout the production from December 2020 and November 2021. It may not be too much ambition to use the word in this sense, yet I’m hesitating, and I like myself to be hesitating. 
This work brings fifteen sets of hand-stamped sentences reindexed from the every May issue published from 1986 to 2000 National Geographical Magazines. I looked at my action of extracting all mays, mights and might haves from the issues and reformatting them into question sentences that start with “May…” as a decolonial gesture. However, I also acknowledge that all the sentences are still formulated in English—one of the colonial languages—and that I don’t know how and what this project will return to the spirits and lands that were, are and have been colonized. 
So I am indeed hesitating. 
The three English auxiliary verbs are used when indefinite ideas are introduced. Significantly, the sentences that contain these verbs are more likely found in articles where non-western countries such as Asia, Africa, and/or native regions are introduced in the magazine. At frequent times in the magazines published up to the new era of the 2000 millennium, these articles depict those cultures of non-western societies similar to how they explore unprecedented climate crises or newly discovered facts about Mars in the publication. This factor draws the underlying perception from the western that mystified and alienated such geo-cultural aspects in the 20 century: non-western regions and countries were treated as unknown geographies whose knowledge and culture were “believed” to be enriched by the knowledge that “provided” by the western. On 13 March 2018, National Geographic Magazine publicly acknowledged their racist misrepresentation of BIPOC groups in their history. &#38;nbsp;

	When non-native speakers of the globally dominant languages such as English, French, or Spanish encounter moments that require them to be fluent in those languages, they tend to mumble. Not only are they not yet accustomed to the languages, but they also immediately anticipate that their utterance, pronunciation, and intonation, would be considered “wrong”. They worry if the factors in their speech would cause their listeners’ difficulties in understanding them. This anticipation accumulated over with their lived experiences would lower their confidence when speaking the languages and even sometimes result in anxiety or frustration. These “supposedly wrong” utterances are frequently described as speech failures and/or mistakes that require constant corrections in order for the speakers to culturally and linguistically integrate into the society of the globalizing languages; these imperial languages have entailed the pressure to master them thus haunted non-native speakers’ lives of migration and assimilation into westernized countries, which is a remnant of post-colonization in languages and, hence, cultures. This aspect has marginalized both non-dominant languages all over the world and everyday lives of residents in the countries because the national and domestic economic growth and cultural longevity have become more dependent on the capability of multilingualism. Meanwhile, this work stands against linguistic ableism by imagining the marginalized tongues as aphasic tongues in the sense of the word used by Rey Chow -- “This loss of voice [...] is a distinct form of [...] ‘limit experience,’ in which one reaches the end of certitude and touches the edge of the abyss. [...] How might aphasia (as the limit of having a voice or being able to speak) be understood simultaneously in relation to racialization.” (91 Chow) In light of these contemplations, this work attempts to unfold a harmonizing time and space for the audience to communicate thoroughly without concerns about imperfect and/or perfect usages of languages. In this realm arisen by this piece, there is only polyphony that is ironically yet beautifully created from the discordant sounds of the music box notes. The activation of the sounds come from voluntary physical communications of the audience by playing the instruments. Moreover, this work strives to germinate a feeling of solace for both the group of the non-native and the native, who too would like to eliminate the barriers that exist between them and the others. By suggesting that “unsuccessful” utterances can be another form of language, the aphasic tongues become the potency to transform into an alternative platform for the future of language and for imaginative means of mutual communications, in the same sense that Rey Chow describes aphasia as something that can be “conceptualized anew as forms of the unveiling, as what exposes the untenability of ‘proper’ speech as such”. (331 Chow) That being so, each participation taken place within this installation work engenders the possibility of decolonizing the hierarchy between languages.

	Dashes out of the Room is one of the several process-based components created for Proposition 3: String Figure (2022).
Dashes out of the Room is the body of
transcription poems composed of intersectional keywords that swirled up between the conversations I had with the six friends, dashes and dots. Dashes and dots are the vessels that I can go back to the moments of the conversations where a lot of subtle, peripheral, fleeting and ephemeral gestures and utterances were made and shared. 
Each set of Intersectional Sentences contains emotional emergence and flows between the friends and me, pauses and hesitancy when the friends and I recalled something related to our respective traumas or tough times during the conversations, breathing to ourselves to grasp bravery to be open-minded and more sharing with one another. When I read them, I am drawn back to the moments of having caring conversations with them as if those ephemeral moments are being revived. All of our subtle, peripheral and fleeting utterances are there, remaining alive, unfolding concurrently with our present troubles, concerns, and anxiety that have been shared between us. 
In short, the work contains: (1) six sets of string figure inventions by the participants, (2) transcriptions of Intersectional Sentences written in dashes and dots and (3) Glossary.
